Yes! The long awaited Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for download through Windows Update. The SP1 is also available in a standalone installer package - around 450mb. Users who choose to update will experience better performance in terms of hardware, software and security.
Windows Vista Service Pack 1 was released on March 18, 2008.
Some of the features of Windows Vista SP1:
- SP1 addresses issues many of the most common causes of crashes and hangs in Windows Vista.
- Adds support for Direct3D® 10.1
- Significantly improves the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath.
- Windows Vista SP1 includes all previously released Security Bulletin fixes which affect Windows Vista.
Before you head over to the download section, Microsoft suggested that you activate your Windows Vista OS, or else you can’t uninstall the SP1 in case of any unseen events.

Transfering files seems a bit faster for my pc after installing SP1.. but my friend installed SP1 on his workstation and it makes his workstation slower than before. So he planned to uninstall SP1. I’ve asked him to do some benchmark before and after uninstall SP1. And the result shows SP1 really affecting his harddisk read/write performance, in a bad way. After uninstalling SP1, everything back to normal speed.
Do you have any information about this problem?
Yes there were some complaints lately from users saying that Vista SP1 only makes their system worst. Most of them had uninstalled it.
But it work great for some systems.
As of now, Microsoft have not say anything to address this issue.
Microsoft should be pushing Vista SP1 onto Automatic Update sometime in April or June.
