
According to Kaspersky Lab (June 5, 2008), the new Virus.Win32.Gpcode.ak variant is said to take your personal files hostage by encrypting them with a 1024-bit key, a huge upgrade from the previous Gpcode variant which was using a 660-bit key.

You may over the years have only been using Norton, McAfee, or PC-cilin but trust me they are the ones who are under-performing in terms of pro-active detection capability compared to the likes of Kaspersky from Russia and NOD32 from Slovak Rep.
Based on test done by AV-comparatives.org, Kaspersky and NOD32 often perform better compared to their rivals. You can visit here to view the test results.
I certainly recommend switching to Kaspersky which is already out with its version 7 but if have a low memory computer or prefer the fastest scanning time then choose ESET NOD32 instead. Both offers very satisfying results. No complain here.
